Ways to help

Money is one way. There are five others.

Leaving an abusive household is mostly a logistics problem. Somebody needs a bed tonight, a bus fare tomorrow, a lawyer on Thursday and a winter coat for a child who left in a hurry. Choose the way you can help, and we will match it to a family.

01

Give money

Unrestricted giving is the most useful thing we receive, because it pays for the unglamorous items that decide whether someone can leave: a taxi fare at midnight, a locksmith, a filing fee, a week of groceries, a replacement identity document. Nopa Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organisation and your gift is tax deductible.

  • A one-off gift of any size
  • A monthly gift, which is what lets us commit to a family for more than a week
  • A gift in memory or in honour of someone
  • Employer matching, which many companies will double

02

Give goods

New or good-as-new practical items go straight to households that left with nothing. Please contact us before delivering anything so we can tell you what is needed this month and where to bring it.

  • Clothing for adults and children, seasonally appropriate, clean and undamaged
  • Underwear, socks and shoes, new only
  • Toiletries, sanitary products, nappies, formula
  • Non-perishable food, supermarket cards and fuel cards
  • Bedding, towels, basic kitchen items and school supplies
  • Prepaid phones and chargers, which are often the single most useful item we hand over

03

Give shelter and housing help

Safe accommodation is the hardest thing to find and the thing survivors ask for most. If you are a landlord, a housing provider, a hotel operator or a congregation with property, we would like to talk to you.

  • Short-term emergency accommodation
  • A deposit or first month of rent for a family being rehoused
  • Furnishing a property that has been secured
  • Waiving or reducing a rental application fee for a survivor with damaged credit

04

Give professional time

Skilled hours are a donation. A single afternoon from the right professional can move a case that has been stuck for months.

  • Attorneys and paralegals for protective orders, custody and immigration remedies
  • Counsellors, therapists and trauma-informed clinicians
  • Interpreters, particularly Shona, Ndebele, Swahili, French, Spanish and Arabic
  • Accountants, IT and phone-security help for people being tracked
  • Employers willing to interview and hire survivors rebuilding a work history

05

Give your hands

Volunteers keep the practical side of this work running, and every volunteer who works near survivors is screened and trained before they start.

  • Sorting, packing and delivering donated goods
  • Driving to appointments, court and school
  • Childcare during hearings and counselling
  • Court accompaniment and hospital accompaniment
  • Administration, translation and website help

06

Give your voice

Partnership and advocacy cost nothing and change the environment survivors report into.

  • Invite us to speak to your congregation, workplace, school or community group
  • Host a training session on recognising abuse and responding well
  • Share the helpline numbers and the warning signs on this site
  • Introduce us to a funder, a clinic, a police liaison or a shelter

Before you donate goods

Call us first

Please email or call before dropping anything off. We hold limited storage, we cannot accept used underwear, expired food, damaged furniture or unsafe electricals, and matching a delivery to a family who needs it this week is what makes the gift count.
