How to identify it
Twelve things to look for
One of these on its own may mean nothing. Several of them together, repeated over months, is a pattern, and a pattern is what abuse looks like from the inside.
- 01You cannot ask a question without being treated as rebellious, divisive or unspiritual.
- 02One person's word is treated as God's word, and disagreeing with them is treated as disagreeing with God.
- 03Scripture arrives as a weapon aimed at you and never at the person using it.
- 04You are told that reporting harm, or even naming it, is a sin against the church or the family.
- 05Confessions or counselling sessions come back to you later as leverage.
- 06You are pushed to forgive and reconcile before you are safe, and long before anything changed.
- 07Contact with family, friends, doctors or therapists is discouraged, monitored or forbidden.
- 08Money is requested in ways you cannot afford, with a spiritual promise or a spiritual threat attached.
- 09Leaving is described as damnation, curse, or losing your children, your community and your standing.
- 10You feel afraid before services, meetings or prayer, and lighter the moment you are away from that person.
- 11You have stopped trusting your own perception of events, and check with them before you decide what you think.
- 12There is no accountability above the leader, and no one outside the group is allowed to look in.
